monsters in the dark
“Monsters in the Dark” is a board game for people with low vision that is very similar to candyland with cards filled with monsters, items, traps, and keys to lock other players within the depths of darkness.
This game was born out of a fear of my own progressing myopia eventually stripping me of the ability to enjoy the pastimes I regularly practice though rarely appreciate, as well as to stretch out my bones from when I was in the Game Design and Production major.
After a long period of researching established games for blind people, I noted all the tactile and audible ways they kept accessibility in mind, as well as ways that I could still keep an interesting design without being too basic in format— utilizing and pushing color, silhouette, and contrast to keep a visually appealing and overall fun game. Additionally, I was able to illustrate and vectorize my art onto each of the cards, find methods of actually applying braille onto the physical media without tearing the paper, and playtest the game with friends for an incredibly amusing birthday!
